Sad to hear that Bob Guccione died of cancer. I used to read Penthouse- for the articles.

According to the American Lung Association, “Smoking is the #1 cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 393,000 deaths per year.”

Which is why I find the situation in shelters so surprising. Many shelters seem to have designated smoking areas- even indoors. Given the emphasis on clean living (e.g. don’t show up drinking), it is surprising the shelters are basically endorsing cigarrettes. I will also say non-smokers are being harmed by the second hand smoke that filtrates through the air at the shelters. Since homeless non-smokers really do not have a choice in where they are staying, they should not be forced to inhale second hand smoke. In any event, it would be nice if the shelters were smoke free environments.
